Meet Al Ponchak

Meet Al Ponchak
Director of Operations

What is your background in moving?

I’ve been working in the industry since I was in high school (almost 40 years, but I’m aging myself!). I got my start working with my father in the warehouse for Larmore Moving Systems. By the time I graduated high school in 1978, I was ready to work full time as a local straight truck driver and packer. After a couple of years driving local, I moved into dispatch where I learned planning, operations and United agency relations. After several years in that role, which included opening a new location in Texas, I returned to the road where I drove shipments within a 1500 miles of Delaware. When Holman Moving Systems and Larmore Moving Systems merged, I joined Holman’s continental coast-to-coast fleet. Eventually, when I decided to settle down in Delaware, I was named Director of Operations for Holman Moving Systems.

What is your area of expertise?

Anything with wheels, I always say! My expertise is in operations, logistics, driver relations and customer service. I manage the day-to-day operations of Holman Moving Systems, including moving and storage logistics, warehouse management and United agency relationships and move coordination.

What do you like most about working in the moving industry?

When I was a driver, I loved being on the road, seeing the country and meeting all sorts of interesting folks. In my role today, I enjoy working with the customers, our fellow United agents and our great team of drivers. I like that moving is such a social industry.

If you could give one tip to a customer, what would it be?

Communicate with your driver. We arrange for our drivers to call the customer the day before the move so that they can discuss moving day and any special needs. Operations and customer service are always here to support the customer, but the driver and the customer are the ones who interact directly and it’s important that they are on the same page.

If you could move anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Most people don’t know that I love to scuba dive! I’d really like to retire in Bora Bora – it’s an idyllic location to live, dive and enjoy life.
