3 Benefits to Hiring a Professional Mover

benefits of working with a moverThe more stories I hear about friends and family moving themselves, the more benefits I think about regarding working with a professional. Don’t get me wrong, there are pros and cons to both sides. But when it comes to stress level, convenience, and safety, there’s no question about it; a professional is the way to go.

I’ve moved several times over the last decade. In some cases I handled the move myself and in others, I’ve went with a professional. After 7 moves (and my eighth just a week away), I have come to the conclusion that for me, going pro is the way to go. Below, are three benefits that a professional moving company can offer that helped me to arrive at that conclusion.

  1. More for your money: At first glance, a DIY move seems like the cheaper option by a landslide. But don’t be fooled. There are “hidden” fees with renting a moving van or truck. The vehicle itself will have a fee based on the size and distance you are traveling. You need to factor in the gas, which adds up quick when filling a truck’s tank. Additionally there are costs associated with any supplies you may need like protective blankets, hand carts, ramps, etc. Lastly, if you are moving alone or with just one other, you may need help on the labor side. Many companies will provide help for an hourly rate. With a professional moving company, you will receive your cost (binding or not) at the end of your in person estimate. A reputable company will be very close in their estimate and there will be no surprises at destination. Many times, the cost that a mover will charge you is barely higher than the total cost of moving yourself. A couple hundred extra dollars is totally worth the weight taken off your shoulders during your move.

  1. Less stress: This is such a huge benefit, especially considering how much work goes into every move. You won’t have to worry about a thing once your packing is complete. As long as you have good communication with your mover, you can rest easy.

  1. A better experience: Speaking of resting easy, picture this – you are driving a uHaul from New York to Florida and 14 hours in, you finally need to sleep. Even though your rented truck has a lock (assuming you paid for one because many times you will have to pay extra for a padlock), isn’t it a little nerve racking to leave everything you own in a truck in a random hotel parking lot? Imagine how much better you’d sleep without having to worry about a potential break-in. Now, your roadtrip can focus on excitement and fun because your mover is delivering your household goods and you have automatic insurance when working with them.

There are cases in which moving yourself may be the better option. But more often than not, the hassle, stress, and cost of a DIY move is outshined by the ease of working with a professional. The excitement of moving to a new home can be dulled by the amount of mental and physical work that the move entails. In my opinion, working with a company that can keep that excitement going for you is totally worth it.
